The two-round tournament ended yesterday in Gastonia, with Fayetteville native Spencer Oxendine atop the leaderboard by three strokes. From the Carolinas PGA official website regarding weather throughout the tournament:
“The 57th GSM Services North Carolina Open Presented by Universal Voice/Data concluded without a rain delay but the players did have to face light drizzle through play.”
The adverse weather proved no matter for the Wolfpack golfer, as he ended the tournament at -7 with a total stroke count of 133. He broke par nine times with eight Birdies & one Eagle; second best total at the tournament. His eight Birdies tied for fourth best among tournament participants.
Par 3’s gave him a bit of a fit, ending the tournament +1 on Par 3’s. He’d make up that ground however by tying for the lead on Par 4 average with a 3.8, he was -5 on all Par 4’s. Spencer finished second overall on the Front 9 throughout the tournament, ending one stroke behind the leader (-4).
His 133 strokes were sixteen better than field average. Oxendine also led both rounds of the Open. The Wolfpack are fortunate to have players of his caliber representing the University on the golf course.
